FACING WASHINGTON
Students' Perspectives of Washington State Governors
The Washington State Historical Society and the Olympia School District invited classes that are studying Washington state history to participate in a portrait exhibition about the men and woman who held the highest political office in our state. The students will take a close look at Washington's history by producing a biographical label and portrait of a territorial or state Governor.
The Washington State Historical Society has provided a detailed curriculum guide incorporating the Essential Learning Requirements for Washington's schools mandated by the Legislature in 1993 and a source book of information on the life and times of each governor.
This pilot program integrates art history and political history that will help students focus on Washington state history. The Olympia students will work with an artist-in-residence to create a portrait, while at the same time Olympia District educators will help facilitate their research about the governor's term in office.
The participating classes will be part of an on-line exhibition available thought the WSHS web site. Twenty-three portraits selected by the WSHM exhibits department will be displayed at the Governor's Gallery along with the original portraits.
The on-line exhibition is scheduled to be available on our web site the first week in April. The original Governor portraits are now on exhibition at the Governor's Gallery in the Legislative building until end of the 1999 Legislative session.
