Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Exhibits

From 1804 to 1806, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery on an epic journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back. Marking two centuries since President Thomas Jefferson issued instructions to the explorers in 1803, the bicentennial of the expedition is being commemorated from 2003 to 2006

The Washington State Historical Society will present at least five exhibits during the bicentennial, three organized by the WSHS and two borrowed from other organizers. Others may yet be added, and the WSHS is associated with other Lewis & Clark bicentennial projects in Washington State, including visitor centers and highway markers.

Beyond Lewis & Clark:
The Army Explores the West

February 15-October 31, 2004
Nearly two hundred years ago, army captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corps of Discovery headed west with orders from President Thomas Jefferson to find a route to the Pacific Ocean and document the land and peoples they encountered on their way. The Lewis and Clark expedition became a model for subsequent army expeditions by Zebulon Pike, Stephen Long, John C. Fremont, and George A. Custer.

An eight-decade story of army exploration west of the Mississippi is traced in the exhibition Beyond Lewis & Clark: The Army Explores the West. Among the hundreds of images and objects in the exhibit are Meriwether Lewis's air rifle, original field notes and maps drafted by William Clark and items associated with the Isaac Stevens railroad survey and treaty tour. The WSHM will be the only West Coast venue to present this nationally touring exhibit.

The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
Sunday, April 15, through Sunday, June 12, 2005
This traveling exhibition of more than seventy books and fourteen artifacts comes from the world's premier Lewis and Clark printed collection. The exhibition focuses on the history of Enlightenment ideas as seen through the printed record of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Organized by Lewis and Clark College.

End of Our Voyage:
Lewis and Clark in Washington

Most of the Lewis & Clark Expedition's journey along the Columbia River was in what is now Washington, and the surveying they did to mark their arrival at the Pacific was at Station Camp, also in Washington. This panel exhibit tells the story of the expedition's journey through Washington, showing the route and the campsites in detail. End of Our Voyage will also be featured at Thomas Jefferson's home in Virginia in January 2003. Following appearances at WSHM and Monticello, the exhibit will circulate to small museums and libraries in Washington, including our own State Capital Museum in Olympia.
Design and fabrication managed by OTAK.
